Jakarta: PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) and PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) have signed a joint declaration to advance the development of a green hydrogen ecosystem in Indonesia. The partnership is aimed at accelerating the transition to clean energy and supporting the country’s Net Zero Emission 2060 target, reports Tempo.co.
PGE President Director Julfi Hadi said the initiative focuses on producing green hydrogen from geothermal energy to support future hydrogen-based vehicle ecosystems. “Although economic challenges remain, we are optimistic that green hydrogen can become a viable clean energy solution with the right ecosystem and business model,” he said on Wednesday, September 24, 2025.
Julfi emphasized that this effort is part of PGE’s “beyond-electricity” strategy, using geothermal heat not just for power generation but also to develop derivative clean energy products that benefit both society and the environment.
TMMIN Technical Director Widjanarko called the collaboration a key step in diversifying Indonesia’s energy sources. “The country needs a mix of energy options, from affordable to premium, with low emissions. Geothermal heat can become one of the pillars of clean energy in the future,” he said.
This is not the first partnership between PGE and Toyota. They have previously collaborated on developing renewable energy solutions such as environmentally friendly lubricants, biodiesel from palm oil, and bioethanol.
The latest initiative builds on PGE’s early September launch of the Ulubelu Green Hydrogen Pilot Project. The facility uses geothermal heat combined with energy-efficient electrolysis technology. Besides producing hydrogen, it functions as a technology learning center, a commercial feasibility test site, and a market study to identify potential future demand.
