Havana: The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Cuba, working with international specialists, has laid out various plans to boost innovation and the use of renewable energy across the country, reports Cuban News Agency.
One such initiative is the project titled “Initiative for the decarbonization of strategic sectors in Cuba based on circular solutions and innovative climate models.” This project was discussed by expert José Antonio la Cal Herrera at the XII Ibero-American University Symposium on the Environment (SUMA 2025).
Ivette Tortosa, a project associate with UNIDO, noted that the Global Environment Facility has provided two million dollars for this project. It will be carried out alongside the Technological University of Havana “José Antonio EcheverrÃa.” The goal is to lower emissions of greenhouse gases by encouraging and supporting new businesses, materials, and ways of operating that reduce carbon in Cuban homes, tourist facilities, and factories.
Speaking at the International Energy Conference, La Cal Herrera, who founded the Spanish company Bioliza—a firm specializing in plants that produce noble gases from biomass—discussed the potential and opportunities of a circular economy in Cuba. He also highlighted the significant role of bioenergy as a tool for moving towards cleaner energy, improving the island’s energy security and supply.
