St-Félicien biomass power plant signs 25-year electricity deal with Hydro-Québec

The St-Félicien Cogeneration Power Plant (SFC), a 22-megawatt facility in Saint-Félicien, Quebec, has signed a new 25-year agreement with Hydro‑Québec to supply electricity. The deal ensures Hydro‑Québec will continue to purchase all the power generated by the plant, extending a long-standing partnership that began in 2001, reports Biomass Magazine.

The SFC plant is operated by Greenleaf Power, a company focused on converting forest byproducts into renewable energy. The facility produces electricity using bark and leftover wood from nearby sawmills. In addition to power, it also provides steam to a neighboring sawmill, helping reduce waste and support local industry.

The electricity generated by the plant is enough to power about 4,300 homes. By using leftover wood from logging and sawmill activities, the plant supports cleaner energy production and helps maintain forest health in the region.

SFC Plant Manager Pascal Turcotte said the new agreement is an important step toward continuing operations and supporting the local economy. “This long-term deal gives us the confidence to keep improving how we operate. It also helps ensure we can keep jobs in the area and do our part in reducing environmental impact,” he said.

Yannick Baillargeon, Prefect of the MRC Domaine du Roy, also welcomed the agreement. “This renewal supports local efforts to turn forest leftovers into clean energy. It’s good news for the environment and for jobs in our region,” he said.

The continued operation of the plant is expected to support local employment, strengthen Quebec’s growing bio-based economy, and contribute to the province’s broader environmental goals.
