Major biogas plant coming to Jeju Island, South Korea, with Canadian partnership

Anaergia Inc., a leading company in turning organic waste into clean energy, has officially signed a significant agreement with New Jeju Bio Co. Ltd. to design and build the Jeju Bio Energy Biogas Plant. This major project, valued at around C$40 million, marks a substantial expansion for Anaergia in the Asian market, reports Chemanalyst.news.

The agreement includes a main contract worth C$30 million (around ₹184 crore) and an additional agreement valued at C$10 million (about ₹62 crore). While the project’s completion is pending the client finalizing their funding, Anaergia expects the facility to be up and running by mid-to-late 2027. This development follows an earlier announcement on September 3, 2024, with the increased contract value reflecting a larger scope and size for the project.

The new Jeju Bio Energy Biogas Plant is set to become a key part of Jeju Island’s efforts for environmental sustainability. The facility is designed to handle approximately 54,000 tons of various organic wastes each year. This includes waste from slaughterhouses and leftover material from local sewage treatment plants. This organic waste will be converted into about two megawatts of renewable energy, significantly helping the island achieve its clean energy goals.

The gas produced will power a system that creates both electricity and heat. This energy will be vital for operating different parts of the plant itself, such as the waste processing, sanitization, and drying systems. This approach will maximize energy efficiency and reduce the plant’s need for outside energy.

Beyond generating energy, the project also includes advanced systems for cleaning and recycling wastewater on-site. This commitment to water management ensures that the plant meets strict environmental rules for water discharge. By turning organic waste into renewable energy and treating wastewater, the Jeju Bio Energy Biogas Plant will play a crucial role in reducing harmful emissions and promoting extensive waste recycling across Jeju Island, supporting the island’s ambitious goal to be “Waste Free Jeju by 2030.”

This project further establishes Anaergia as a pioneering technology company in the renewable natural gas sector. With over 250 patented technologies for converting organic waste into sustainable solutions like clean energy, fertilizer, and water, Anaergia is dedicated to tackling a major source of greenhouse gases through efficient processes. Their unique technologies, combined with extensive engineering know-how and a proven track record of delivering numerous innovative projects worldwide, enable them to offer a complete range of solutions, including solid waste processing, wastewater treatment, organic material recovery, advanced waste breakdown, and clean gas production.
