Andhra Pradesh signs MoU with NTI Aayog, ISEG Foundation for clean energy roadmap

The Government of Andhra Pradesh has taken a major step toward a sustainable energy future by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NITI Aayog and the ISEG Foundation to roll out a detailed State Energy Transition Roadmap. The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who emphasised the state’s long-standing commitment to power sector reforms and renewable energy, reports Egov.

During the signing ceremony, Chief Minister Naidu recalled that the undivided Andhra Pradesh had led the country in power reforms as early as 1998. After the state’s reorganisation in 2014, the government prioritised renewable energy, creating the foundation for affordable and clean electricity. He said Andhra Pradesh is now focused on advanced technologies that allow citizens to generate and consume power at the local level. This shift, he said, will help reduce power losses and promote the use of electric vehicles, thereby cutting transport costs.

Naidu reaffirmed the state’s goal of creating a diverse and clean energy portfolio, including solar, wind, pumped hydro storage, battery storage, and green hydrogen. He stressed that the state’s rich natural resources make it well-suited to lead India’s green energy movement. He also appealed to NITI Aayog for ongoing support in implementing this vision.

The agreement will support efforts to increase the share of renewable energy in Andhra Pradesh’s total power capacity. The state’s current installed capacity stands at 27.3 gigawatts (GW), with electricity demand rising steadily—from 55.6 billion units in 2019 to 69.7 billion units in 2025. Projections suggest that demand will continue to rise, reaching 88.6 billion units in 2026 and 163.9 billion units by 2035, driven largely by growth in the industrial and residential sectors.

To meet these growing needs in a sustainable way, Andhra Pradesh has outlined a bold set of targets under its Integrated Clean Energy Policy. By 2029, the state aims to develop 78.5 GW of solar power, 35 GW of wind energy, 22 GW of pumped hydro storage, 1.5 million metric tonnes per year of green hydrogen, 25 GW of battery storage, 1,500 kilolitres per day of ethanol production, 5,000 electric vehicle charging stations, and 10,000 tonnes per day of bio-CNG and compressed biogas.

So far, the state has attracted investments worth ₹5.78 lakh crore in the clean energy sector, supporting a projected capacity of 57.7 GW.

Several senior officials, including Energy Minister Gottipati Ravikumar, NITI Aayog CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, Chief Secretary K.S. Jawahar Reddy, and ISEG Foundation representatives attended the MoU event.
