Valmet to deliver Automation System To BIR biogas plant In Norway

Valmet will supply the Valmet DNAe Distributed Control System to BIR AS’s biogas plant in Bergen, Norway, constructed by Biovoima Finland Oy. This facility is designed to process 15,000 tons of organic waste and 40,000 tons of cattle manure, with the goal of producing biomethane to substitute fossil fuels in the global energy transition.

This order is part of Valmet’s third-quarter 2024 receipts. The factory acceptance test is scheduled for May 2025, followed by the final acceptance test in December 2025, with the biogas plant set to become operational in 2026.

Previously, Biovoima selected the same automation system for the first biogas plant in the Baltics, which processes household and commercial biowaste in Tallinn, Estonia.

Tero Kemppi, Project Manager at Biovoima Finland Oy, stated, “Valmet was the clear choice for this project due to their prior experience with BIR’s waste-to-energy plant and our past collaborations. Their advanced automation system, featuring web-based engineering tools and a user-friendly interface, ensures excellent results from the outset.”

Arto Mäkinen, Sales Manager for Energy and Process Industry Automation Systems at Valmet, added, “Our latest Valmet DNAe Distributed Control System enables facilities like this to make data-driven decisions to achieve production, quality, and environmental goals through reliable control and advanced analytics. Biovoima can rely on Valmet as a dedicated partner committed to evolving together throughout the project lifecycle and considering the future of energy transition.”

Technical details of the delivery include the Valmet DNAe automation system with the web-based Valmet DNAe User Interface, a DNAe Historian Server, single-channel I/O cards, Profinet fieldbuses for motor control and unit control, as well as spare parts. The scope also covers application, system, and display engineering.
