Ukraine launches national biomethane register to boost green gas trade

Ukraine has launched a national Biomethane Register, introducing a state-run digital platform to monitor and confirm the origin of renewable gas from production to final use or export, Bioenergy Insight reported.

The register is operated by the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine. It records the volumes of biomethane injected into and withdrawn from the gas transmission and distribution network and manages the issuance, transfer and cancellation of guarantees of origin -documents required for trading green gas in European Union markets.

Anna Zamazeeva, head of the agency, said the system lays the foundation for a fully functional biomethane market. She noted that without such infrastructure, expansion, investment and international trade would not have been possible. According to her, the platform introduces a clear and transparent mechanism that makes it possible to identify every cubic metre of biomethane produced, track its movement within the system and confirm its renewable source.

The register is accessible to biomethane producers, buyers, grid operators and their authorised representatives. It has been developed in line with the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directives RED II and RED III, creating the legal framework for Ukrainian biomethane to gain recognition in EU markets.

Ukraine began exporting biomethane to the EU in 2025 for the first time, with total gaseous biomethane exports exceeding about 11.2 million cubic metres. The country currently operates seven biomethane plants with a combined annual capacity of more than 110 million cubic metres. Major producers include MHP Group, Vitagro Group, Gals Agro and YM Liquid Gas.

Zamazeeva added that the new register will provide greater certainty for investors and prevent double counting, while also helping the government reduce fraud risks and maintain accurate accounting of biomethane in the country’s energy mix and climate strategy.
