Tiruchi Corporation to establish bio-CNG plant at Ariyamangalam dump yard

The Tiruchi Corporation has announced plans to establish a bio-compressed natural gas (bio-CNG) plant at the Ariyamangalam dump yard, which will have the capacity to process approximately 100 tonnes of organic waste per day. Construction of the facility is expected to begin in October, reported The Hindu.

Following the completion of phase II of biomining at the dump yard, the corporation has taken initial steps to set up a biogas plant. This plant will process vegetable, meat, and other organic waste to generate CNG.

As per media report, a total of Rs. 35 crore has been allocated for this project under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) 2.0. Approximately four acres of land within the reclaimed area of the dump yard will be used for the plant.

A tender was issued several months ago to select a suitable contractor for the construction of the plant, which will operate under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The plant will convert waste from households and commercial establishments into biogas.

Corporation Commissioner V. Saravanan stated, “The tender will be awarded soon, and the project is expected to begin next month. We anticipate that the project will be completed within 12 months of starting work.”

The plant will be developed using the design, build, finance, operate, and transfer (DBFOT) model. After 20 years, the contractor will hand over the assets back to the corporation.

The bio-CNG produced will be used for commercial purposes, such as fueling transport vehicles. Officials noted that the biogas plant will help prevent the dump yard from being used for waste disposal and improve air quality by reducing waste burning.

Additionally, a material recovery facility will be established at the site to sort dry waste into recyclable, non-recyclable, inert, and refuse-derived fuel. This sorted waste will be sold to scrap dealers and factories for further use.

The corporation has outsourced the tasks of waste collection, segregation, transportation, and processing for all 65 wards in the city to a private agency. On average, 400-450 tonnes of municipal solid waste is collected daily from households across the city.
