Tesla saw a steep decline in new car registrations in Portugal last month, even as the country’s overall electric vehicle (EV) market continued to grow. According to the Automobile Association of Portugal (ACAP), Tesla registered 284 new vehicles in July—a 48.5% drop compared to the same month last year, reports The Economic Times.
From January to July, Tesla’s total registrations in the country stood at 4,372 units, marking a 27.4% decrease from the same period last year. In contrast, registrations of all light electric vehicles in Portugal rose by 9.5% in July and 27.2% over the seven-month period.
Similar trends were observed in other key European markets on Friday, with Tesla registrations falling across the board despite the recent update to its popular Model Y. The company has faced increasing competition, regulatory pressure, and growing public criticism of CEO Elon Musk’s political stances, all of which are believed to be affecting its performance.
