Valmet has secured a contract from Kraftringen Energi to deliver a bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) boiler and flue gas handling system for a new combined heat and power (CHP) facility in Örtofta, located in the municipality of Eslöv, Skåne, southern Sweden.
The project forms part of Valmet’s order intake for the second quarter of 2025. While the value of the order has not been publicly disclosed, the investment marks a major step forward in energy infrastructure for the region.
Adjacent to the existing CHP plant in Örtofta, the new facility is designed to replace aging production units and enhance the reliability of district heating supply. It will provide heating and hot water to much of central and western Skåne, significantly improving energy resilience. By nearly doubling Örtofta’s generation capacity, the plant will be capable of delivering up to 25 megawatts of electricity to new customers, alongside expanded delivery of process steam and stable, locally produced power.
The plant will be equipped with Valmet’s advanced flue gas treatment technology, which includes integrated heat recovery. This will allow additional energy to be channeled back into the district heating network, boosting both efficiency and sustainability. The system is also engineered to support the future integration of carbon capture technologies, aligning with long-term environmental goals.
Installation is scheduled to begin in June 2026, with full operations expected to start in 2028. The project represents the largest investment in energy production in Skåne in the last ten years and is seen as a critical move toward greater energy security for the region.
Fredrik Fackler, Business Area Manager for Heating and Cooling at Kraftringen, emphasized the significance of the development:
“This is a crucial investment for Kraftringen. The new facility allows us to retire older units in favor of modern, more efficient technologies, which ensures availability and strengthens the region’s energy preparedness. We’re pleased to have Valmet on board, given their proven expertise in this field and track record with similar projects.”
Niina Ollikka, Vice President of Boilers and Gasifier Solutions at Valmet, echoed the sentiment:
“We’re proud to contribute to the development of Kraftringen Energi’s new CHP plant. Our ability to deliver sustainable and efficient energy solutions not only met but exceeded the customer’s expectations. This order is strategically important for us, reinforcing our commitment to future-ready energy infrastructure with carbon capture potential.”
