Swachh Bharat Mission joint secretary reviews Bio-CNG and Biomining plants in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam: Rupa Mishra, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for the Swachh Bharat Mission, on Thursday inspected the Bio-CNG and biomining facilities at the Kapuluppada dumping yard under the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC). She was accompanied by GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg and senior officials, reports The Hindu.

During the visit, she sought details on the start date of full-scale biogas plant operations, its daily gas production capacity, pricing framework, and the waste collection system used to supply the plant.

K.S. Raju, CEO of Vizag Bio Energy Fuel Pvt. Ltd, explained that the plant processes 30 tonnes of vegetable and food waste every day and generates nearly 1,000 kg of Bio-CNG. He said the facility also produces 30,000 litres of Liquid Fermented Organic Manure daily, which is supplied to farmers and GVMC for developing urban gardens. In addition, around 4 tonnes of solid manure are produced each day and distributed to farmers for organic cultivation. He added that Phosphorus Rich Organic Manure is currently under trial production ahead of its commercial rollout.

After reviewing the waste-processing system and the different types of organic manure produced, the Joint Secretary advised the GVMC Commissioner to take additional steps to further improve the plant’s performance.

When she enquired about the progress of biomining, officials reported that of the 14 lakh tonnes of legacy waste, only 3 lakh tonnes remain to be processed. Mishra appreciated the ongoing work but recommended exploring further enhancements. She directed that the remaining biomining activities be completed by the end of February 2026 and expressed satisfaction with the overall functioning of both the biogas and biomining units.

GVMC Chief Medical Officer E.N.V. Naresh Kumar and other officials were also present.
