South Korea: Hyundai E&C wins $132 million biogas project

Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co. (Hyundai E&C) announced on Monday that it had been chosen as the preferred bidder for a private investment project involving the construction of a metropolitan integrated biogas facility in Gumi City, North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea.

The project aims to revamp the Gumi sewage treatment plant in Chilgokgun, North Gyeongsang Province, to handle food waste, sewage residue, and manure.

Biogas will be generated from 475 tonnes of organic waste produced daily by Gumi City and Chilgok County, with the resulting gas supplied as city gas to neighboring areas.

The anticipated annual output is 5.5 million N㎥ per year, which will serve approximately 9,000 households.

To address odor issues and enhance operational efficiency, the existing facilities will be consolidated and relocated underground.

The overall project cost stands at 176.7 billion won ($132 million), with a construction period of 48 months from the groundbreaking date. Following completion, the facility will be operational for 20 years.
