Reliance Industries plans to establish 500 Compressed Biogas (CBG) plants across India by 2030, a move aimed at turning farmers into energy producers, Executive Director Anant Ambani announced at the company’s annual general meeting on August 29, reports Moneycontrol.
For the current financial year, the company is targeting the rollout of 55 CBG plants with a combined capacity of 500,000 tonnes, he said.
“We entered the bioenergy sector with a clear goal – to help India achieve energy independence and give farmers an opportunity to contribute as energy providers. By 2030, we aim to scale up to more than 500 CBG plants,” Ambani told shareholders.
He also pointed to research and development efforts at Reliance’s Jamnagar facility, where teams are working on advanced enzymes, microbial solutions, and high-yield crops to enhance biogas output.
The company is developing what Ambani described as the world’s first integrated energy hub, bringing together smart farms, modular CBG plants, green hydrogen, and agrivoltaics — a system where CBG production and solar power generation take place on the same land.
“I am particularly proud of our agrivoltaics initiative. By capturing carbon dioxide from CBG plants, these hubs will also serve as platforms for producing green chemicals at competitive costs,” Ambani said.
