Ludhiana: The Punjab government’s expert committee on Monday approved the proposed Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at Bagga Kalan village after the company agreed to make technological changes to remove pesticide and insecticide residues from biomass and operate the project under zero-pollution conditions, reports Hindustan Times.
The final meeting of the committee was held at Bachat Bhawan and was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain. Additional Deputy Commissioner (Rural Development) Amarjit Bains and senior district administration officials were also present.
The expert committee included specialists from agriculture, bio-energy, chemical engineering, oncology, environmental science and public health. Members included scientists and experts from ICAR, IIT Ropar, IIT Delhi, Punjab Agricultural University Ludhiana, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital Ludhiana, the Punjab Pollution Control Board, the Punjab Energy Development Agency and NIBE Kapurthala. Representatives of the Talmel Sangarsh Committee, village sarpanches and local residents also took part in the discussions.
During the meeting, Dr Balwinder Singh Aulakh made a detailed presentation on the proposed biogas plant. He explained the technology involved and responded to concerns raised by villagers about environmental and health impacts. He also proposed specific technological modifications to ensure that insecticides, pesticides and other harmful substances are removed from the biomass before it is processed at the plant.
