Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has recently inaugurated the MEPL BioEnergy Biogas Plant—the First CBG Plant in Batala & CGD Connectivity Project for Punjab and Haryana, along with the newly-upgraded sugar mill facility in Batala. This plant is going to utilize the waste from the Batala and Gurdaspur sugar mills to produce biogas on a daily basis. The CBG plant aims to process 100 TDP (tons per day) of pressmud to generate 5.6 TPD of biogas with the support of Sugarfed Punjab.
The facility is built on around 10 acres of land with an investment of 35 crore. Through this new facility, Gujarat Gas Limited (GGL) supplies piped natural gas (PNG) to customers in nearby and surrounding areas. This MEPL BioEnergy LLP CBG plant is established in collaboration with CEID Consultants and Engineering Pvt Ltd, a leading EPC company in the CBG sector. The Compressed Biogas (CBG) offtake facility in Batala, Gurdaspur, is the first of its kind in Punjab. GGL has also successfully converted its first domestic PNG customer in a nearby village, providing clean energy through this network. This achievement supports the clean and green energy revolution, which is in sync with the initiatives of both the Government of India and the Government of Punjab to reduce air pollution.
“This is a holy land given to us by great gurus and is the home of patriotic, brave, and hardworking people,” Punjab Chief Minister, Mr. Bhagwant Mann, said while addressing the audience. He also stated that initiatives such as the improved sugar mill and new CBG facilities would provide job opportunities to local people, reversing the migration trend and contributing to Punjab’s socioeconomic improvement.
Speaking at the inauguration of the CBG Plant, Mr. Alok Jain, Director MEPL, said, “We are thrilled to announce the commissioning of this new plant in Batala and bringing innovative and eco-friendly solutions to the region’s energy needs. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to our entire team, Gujarat Gas Ltd., and CEID consultants on the successful completion of this plant. Through this initiative of treating press mud and cow dung, we aim to contribute to both cleaner energy and rural economic growth. Our trust in CEID consultants and engineering made me move from America to India. Initially, I had planned to set up a plant in the US in collaboration with CEID, but this opportunity in Batala made me come to India and settle down to work on this project myself, supporting sustainable energy solutions and advancing renewable energy production utilizing agro-industrial waste from sugar mills in India.”
On the successful inauguration ceremony, Mr. Prince Gandhi, CEO & Founder of CEID Consultants & Engineering Pvt. Ltd., said, “I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the MEPL Bioenergy team for this new plant with CBG Injection and am grateful to Mr. Alok Jain Sir for giving us the opportunity and the trusting CEID. Also, we are proud to announce that this is our second pipeline injection plant with Gujarat Gas Limited; earlier, we planted another pipeline injection plant in Nadiad for Gujarat Gas. This plant is a significant milestone in our journey towards sustainability, where the utilization of pressmud can produce millions of cubic meters of biogas. This conversion can provide an additional income stream for sugar mills, enhancing their profitability and sustainability along with generating employment for nearby residents.”
