Polska Grupa Biogazowa opens 20th biogas investment in Poland

Polska Grupa Biogazowa (PGB), a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, has inaugurated its 20th biogas investment in the town of Półwieś, located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, reported Bioenergy Insight.

The newly opened plant is set to generate 8.3 GWh of electricity and 8 GWh of heat annually, which is enough to meet the energy needs of approximately 3,000 Polish households.

The inauguration ceremony took place on November 5th last year and was attended by local government officials and members of the PGB S.A. management board. The company highlighted this milestone as a significant step toward expanding Poland’s green energy sector and reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

“For many years, PGB has been actively supporting Poland’s shift toward cleaner energy by developing biogas technology that utilizes local renewable resources. This allows us to generate environmentally friendly electricity,” said Łukasz Semeniuk, General Director of Polska Grupa Biogazowa.

He emphasized the broader benefits of biogas technology, explaining, “Biogas energy plays a vital role in the circular economy. It helps manage organic waste, generates electricity and heat, and produces digestate, a natural fertilizer that supports sustainable farming. Investing in biogas plants not only promotes renewable energy but also creates jobs, boosting the local economy.”

PGB also pointed out that the new facility will provide additional advantages for local industries. “This investment supports local farmers and businesses by efficiently converting organic waste into clean energy. Our calculations show that the electricity produced here will have a 67% lower carbon footprint compared to traditional power generation methods in Poland,” the company stated.

Another unique feature of the plant is its cogeneration process, which enables it to supply energy while also providing a specialized wood-drying service. “This is particularly beneficial for furniture makers and carpentry workshops, as it ensures efficient and eco-friendly production,” the company explained. “Additionally, the digestate produced during methane fermentation is rich in key nutrients like nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus, making it a sustainable alternative to traditional fertilizers.”

Polska Grupa Biogazowa currently operates 20 biogas plants with a combined capacity of 21 MW. The company has around 50 projects in advanced development stages, with many more in the planning phase, as it continues to expand its role in Poland’s renewable energy landscape.
