Petronet LNG is expanding the capacity of its Dahej terminal from 17.5 MMTPA to 22.5 MMTPA as part of India’s efforts toward energy self-sufficiency. The Dahej LNG terminal in Gujarat is the largest single-location LNG storage and regasification facility in India.
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced on X, “The capacity of @PetronetLNGLtd’s Dahej LNG Terminal, India’s largest single-location LNG storage and regasification facility, is being increased to 22.5 MMTPA from 17.5 MMTPA as part of India’s journey towards energy self-sufficiency under the leadership of PM @narendramodi Ji.”
India relies on imported LNG to meet about 45 percent of its natural gas demand, with imports coming through long-term contracts or spot purchases from international markets. Most long-term contracts are either crude-linked, primarily from the Middle East, or gas-linked, mainly from the US. Natural gas in India is predominantly used in the fertilizer, refinery, petrochemical industries, and city gas sectors. The Dahej facility was established to serve customers without access to pipelines.
As India’s energy sector continues to develop, the country’s path toward energy self-sufficiency is advancing. Minister Puri recently highlighted the ongoing expansion of the Numaligarh Refinery in Assam, which will increase its refining capacity from 3 million tonnes per year to 9 MMTPA upon completion. A pipeline approximately 1,640 km long is being constructed from Paradip Port to Numaligarh to transport imported crude. This expansion is expected to be completed by 2024, with an approved budget of Rs 28,026 crore. The refinery’s environmental clearance was granted in July 2020.
Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) is the largest of the four refineries in Assam and plays a significant role in the economic development of the region.
