NTPC to establish 1 TPD seawater to green hydrogen plant

NTPC has announced that its R&D centre, NETRA, is setting up a 1 tonne per day (TPD) seawater-to-green hydrogen plant at the NTPC Simhadri site near Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The project will incorporate an innovative low-carbon desalination process that converts seawater into hydrogen-grade water by utilizing waste heat from the thermal power plant’s flue gas. Producing 1 kg of hydrogen typically requires 12–13 kg of purified water. In response to water scarcity, the Government of India is focusing on developing technologies to produce hydrogen from low-grade water sources such as seawater and wastewater.

This initiative by NTPC supports this national strategy, aiming to enhance the efficiency of hydrogen production. The project is being carried out by NTPC Green Energy Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC, which is working on various initiatives to help achieve the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
