Nine ethanol plants to come up in Bihar; 50,000 jobs expected to be created

A significant number of factories are being set up across Bihar, generating numerous employment opportunities for the state’s residents. By 2026, nine new ethanol plants are expected to be established, which will enhance ethanol production in the state and create jobs for around 50,000 people, according to the various media reports. These developments will particularly benefit farmers engaged in the cultivation of sugarcane and maize.

The new ethanol plants will help reduce sugarcane growers’ reliance on sugar mills. These plants will be spread across eight districts of Bihar, including Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Kaimur, Muzaffarpur, Barh, Jamui, Vaishali, and Buxar. Ethanol production is expected to commence in Bhagalpur and Kaimur by 2025.

With the establishment of these plants, the area under sugarcane and maize cultivation in the state is anticipated to expand. Sugarcane is primarily grown in West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Sitamarhi, Siwan, and Samastipur, while maize is cultivated in districts such as Katihar, Purnia, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, Madhepura, Khagaria, Samastipur, Araria, and Darbhanga.

Bihar’s Industry Minister, Nitish Mishra, has expressed confidence that the new plants will not only increase ethanol production but also meet the growing demand for ethanol within the state.

Bihar is positioning itself as a major player in the ethanol industry with plans to significantly increase its production capacity. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary recently highlighted the importance of setting up additional ethanol plants in the state. He emphasized, “It is essential to establish more ethanol plants in Bihar. This will benefit farmers growing maize, rice, and other cereals, as they will be able to sell their produce directly to the plants, ensuring a steady income.”
