Neste enables North Brunswick to be the first township in New Jersey to transition to renewable diesel

Neste, the world’s leading producer of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel, has announced a partnership with the Township of North Brunswick in New Jersey. This collaboration enables all diesel vehicles and equipment in North Brunswick to transition to renewable diesel, making it the first township in the state to adopt this fuel for its fleet operations.

“Renewable diesel can play a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from municipal fleets,” said Carrie Song, Senior Vice President, Commercial, Renewable Products at Neste. “Our partnership with the Township of North Brunswick and fuel distributor KW Rastall Oil exemplifies how low-emission solutions like renewable diesel support municipalities in achieving their sustainability goals.”

The township conducted its initial trial of switching from fossil diesel to Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ in early May 2024, using it in Department of Public Works (DPW) trucks. Made from 100% renewable raw materials such as used cooking oil and animal fat waste, Neste MY Renewable Diesel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 75% over its life cycle compared to fossil diesel. Moreover, it is fully compatible with all diesel engines and provides equivalent performance, enabling North Brunswick to transition seamlessly without requiring new fueling infrastructure or modifications to its fleet.

North Brunswick’s entire fleet of diesel vehicles, including emergency medical services vehicles, fire trucks, public works vehicles, school buses, and backup generators, now runs on Neste’s renewable diesel. Annually, these vehicles and equipment will consume over 48,000 gallons (141 tons) of renewable diesel, potentially reducing GHG emissions by up to 470 tons per year compared to fossil diesel use. This reduction is equivalent to the annual direct emissions from more than 110 passenger vehicles, as estimated by the EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator.

The delivery of Neste’s renewable diesel is facilitated by Diesel Direct and KW Rastall Oil, prominent fuel service providers in New Jersey. In April 2024, KW Rastall Oil launched North Brunswick’s first public renewable diesel fueling station, supporting the township’s commitment to sustainability. Francis Mac Womack, Mayor of North Brunswick Township, and the Township Council have welcomed the switch to renewable diesel, anticipating a positive impact on reducing the municipal carbon footprint.

Over the past decade, Neste has supplied renewable diesel to more than 100 municipal customers, school districts, and local transit authorities on the U.S. West Coast, contributing to their efforts in combating climate change. With a global annual production capacity of 1.9 billion gallons (5.5 million tons) of renewable products, Neste has been a pioneering supplier of renewable diesel to states like California and Oregon, and is expanding production, fueling stations, and distribution capabilities to meet increasing demand across the United States and globally.
