Naina Devi Temple becomes first in Himachal to generate biogas from langar waste

The Naina Devi Temple has become the first Shakti Peeth in Himachal Pradesh to produce biogas from organic waste generated in its community kitchen, officials said, The Economic Times reported.

Located in Bilaspur district, the temple attracts a large number of devotees daily. With the launch of this initiative, it has set a precedent among religious institutions in the state by converting langar waste into usable energy.

According to officials, the temple trust has installed a modern pre-fabricated biogas plant with solid waste management features. The plant is now fully operational, and the gas produced is being used directly in the kitchen to prepare prasad and meals for devotees.

The facility currently processes about 200 kilograms of organic waste and produces around 20 kilograms of biogas per day in its initial phase. Authorities said the capacity will be expanded in the future to match the daily use of commercial LPG cylinders.

At present, the temple’s kitchen uses between five and eight LPG cylinders daily to serve food throughout the day. The new system is expected to reduce fuel costs while also ensuring proper disposal of waste, which had earlier posed challenges for the temple administration.

Officials added that the project was set up with technical support from Green Brick Eco Solutions and marks a step towards sustainable practices in religious institutions.
