Malaysia: B15 biodiesel rollout gains support, concerns linger over older lorries

Petaling Jaya: Transport operators in Malaysia have largely backed the rollout of B15 biodiesel starting next month, though concerns remain about its impact on older lorries and long-term maintenance costs.

Mohamad Ashfar Ali said bus operators support the move, noting that the industry has already adapted to earlier biodiesel blends such as B5 and B10, The Star reported.

He said the shift would benefit the local palm oil sector while helping reduce fuel import costs. The government recently announced that 19 licensed plants will begin producing B15 biodiesel from June 1 as part of efforts to stabilise diesel prices.

Ashfar added that modern bus engines are compatible with biodiesel blends and can handle B15 without major issues. He noted that earlier concerns about corrosion have largely been addressed with improved engine materials.

According to him, operators have not reported significant increases in repair or maintenance costs, even for older buses built in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also said operators would continue to have the option of using Euro 5 diesel.

However, Ng Koong Sinn said the readiness of lorry operators remains uneven, mainly due to technical concerns with older vehicles.

He explained that the higher moisture content in biodiesel could affect fuel systems, especially high-pressure injection components, leading to possible corrosion and early wear. There are also concerns about microbial contamination, which can clog filters and impact engine performance.

Ng added that older lorries may require more frequent maintenance, as biodiesel can loosen deposits in ageing fuel systems. He also pointed out that biodiesel has slightly lower energy content, which could affect fuel efficiency.

He said operators are seeking clearer guidance from authorities and manufacturers on maintenance needs, warranty coverage and long-term engine performance under B15 use.
