Karachi launches pilot project to turn kitchen and animal waste into biogas and fertiliser

A new pilot project aimed at converting kitchen and animal waste into biogas and organic fertiliser has been launched in District South of Karachi, according to The News.

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab visited a workshop of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to inspect the bio-dome installed as part of a joint initiative by the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) and Aysis International. He was accompanied by SSWMB Managing Director Tariq Ali Nizamani, states Bioenergy Insight.

The mayor praised the engineers behind the project and called it a major step towards sustainable waste management. He noted that efforts were already underway to make waste reusable, including door-to-door collection, and that the city plans to set up recycling plants in every district to reduce waste and increase resource recovery.

Mayor Wahab also stressed the need to identify sites for larger-scale installations and assured that the city government would fully support the expansion of such initiatives. He proposed that the current pilot be scaled up to have a broader impact on the cleanliness of Karachi.

The bio-dome installed as part of the pilot project is capable of processing up to 10 kilograms of food and animal waste daily, including vegetable and fruit peels, food scraps, and animal dung. The system produces around 3 kilograms of biogas each day, which can be used for cooking. The leftover material is processed into organic fertiliser.

SSWMB Managing Director Nizamani added that waste segregation at the source had already begun in various districts. Recyclable materials are being collected separately and sent to the Haryali Hub for further processing.
