Jharkhand showcases ethanol potential from Sisal At IITF

New Delhi: The Jharkhand Pavilion at the 44th India International Trade Fair (IITF) 2025 has become one of the main attractions this year, presenting the state’s efforts in green innovation and sustainable rural development. Managed by the Department of Forest, Environment & Climate Change, the pavilion is drawing widespread interest for promoting a resilient green economy through Sisal cultivation and eco-friendly jute products.

A major highlight of the pavilion is Sisal, a hardy plant that grows with very little water and can survive on barren land. Jharkhand is expanding Sisal cultivation as a way to support rural communities. The fibre from the plant is used to make ropes, mats, bags, and a range of hand-crafted items. Its juice has potential for producing bio-ethanol and clean energy, while its use in traditional remedies and personal-care products is encouraging small-scale businesses. Because Sisal grows well in poor soil, it is also important for soil protection and climate-resilient farming.

Giving an update on the progress, project officer Anitesh Kumar said Sisal cultivation has reached 450 hectares, and the aim is to increase it by another 100 hectares this financial year. He said last year’s production was 150 metric tonnes, and the target for the current year is 82 metric tonnes.

The pavilion also highlights Jharkhand’s strong jute tradition, featuring eco-friendly home décor, daily-use items, and handwoven bags created by local artisans. These products reflect the state’s cultural identity while offering new opportunities for rural producers in both domestic and international markets.

Through these initiatives, Jharkhand is generating nearly 90,000 labour days each year, strengthening green livelihoods and promoting climate-friendly development. At IITF 2025, the state aims to attract investment, build market connections, and find technical partners to expand Sisal-based industries and support rural communities.
