Italian energy firm Italgas has unveiled plans to invest €1 billion in Greece as part of its 2024-2030 Strategic Plan aimed at supporting the country’s ecological transition. The initiative will be carried out through its Greek subsidiary, Enaon, and is focused on four key areas.
A major component of the plan is to extend Greece’s gas distribution network, bringing cleaner energy to areas not currently connected. This move aims to phase out the use of more polluting fuels like lignite and coal.
Enaon also plans to digitally transform the energy network, which includes replacing traditional smart meters with advanced “H2 ready” technology. These meters will support future hydrogen integration into the system, laying the groundwork for Greece’s clean energy future.
The company is prioritizing the development of renewable gases, particularly biomethane and green hydrogen, to boost decarbonization. Enaon is reviewing Greece’s major biogas facilities to link them to the distribution network and upgrade them to biomethane production. On the hydrogen front, a network-wide assessment is underway to ensure compatibility with hydrogen and determine the upgrades needed to support hydrogen distribution.
Another major focus is the construction of over 3,000 kilometres of new network infrastructure for €650 million. This expansion will connect 18 new cities — including Patra, Ioannina, Kastoria, Florina, Grevena, and Orestiada — to the gas network, extending access to new areas. The project is expected to increase the number of Enaon’s customers from the current 615,000 to 920,000 by 2030.
Paolo Gallo, CEO of Italgas, described the plan as a significant boost to Greece’s energy future. “This plan brings €1 billion to Greece and outlines the development path of the country’s energy infrastructure. It leverages local expertise and Italy’s experience to introduce advanced technologies more quickly and develop the network,” he said.
Gallo pointed out the key role of digital transformation: full network automation through DANA and the “H2 ready” Nimbus smart meter. These, he said, would speed up the “green gas revolution” in Greece.
Enaon, he continued, is contributing to Greece’s development by “actively promoting an ecological transition that ensures safety, sustainability, and cost competitiveness for families and businesses.
