International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology celebrates World Biofuel Day with focus on advanced biofuels and carbon capture

The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) marked World Biofuel Day with a special event at its New Delhi campus, aimed at highlighting advancements in biofuels and carbon capture technologies.

The event gathered students, researchers, and experts to explore the development, potential, and opportunities associated with advanced biofuels, aligning with global and national goals for achieving Net Zero CO2 emissions.

A key moment of the event was the keynote address by the Chief Guest, Shri Ramakrishna YB, Former Chairperson of the Working Group on Biofuels under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoP&NG), Government of India, and Current Member Expert – Working Group on Biofuels, MoP&NG. His presentation, titled ‘Emerging Policy Ecosystem in India for Advanced Biofuels and Opportunities Towards Achieving Net Zero by 2070’, provided insights into the existing policy framework, opportunities, and the future outlook for biofuels in India.

Shri Ramakrishna YB emphasized, “The biofuel sector holds tremendous potential, surpassing even the agriculture sector in scale. It requires extensive research and development to address technical and economic challenges, making it commercially viable and unlocking its vast opportunities for sustainable energy production.”

Adding to the occasion’s significance, Shri Ramakrishna YB also premiered two short films produced by ICGEB, which highlighted the institution’s research in biofuels and carbon capture. The first film, ‘Building a Greener Future: The Carbon Quest,’ showcased cutting-edge research in carbon capture and its role in achieving a sustainable future. The second film, ‘Building a Greener Future: Biomass to Biofuels,’ demonstrated ICGEB’s work in converting biomass into biofuels, a vital research area with significant potential for reducing carbon emissions.

The event also featured participation from students of three prestigious Delhi University colleges and two Kendriya Vidyalaya schools. These students had the unique opportunity to engage with leading scientists at ICGEB, gaining inspiration and insights into ongoing research in biofuels and carbon capture.

Furthermore, the students experienced live demonstrations from various ICGEB labs, which provided practical insights into biofuel production and carbon capture technologies, enhancing their understanding of the scientific processes involved.

ICGEB’s World Biofuel Day 2024 celebration underscored its dedication to pioneering research while also aiming to engage and inspire the next generation in the pursuit of a sustainable and green future.
