In a significant move to bolster bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, Union Minister for Power Shri Manohar Lal, along with MoS Power and New & Renewable Energy Shri Shripad Naik and senior Ministry of Power officials, engaged in a productive discussion with the US delegation led by H.E. Mr. John Podesta, Senior Advisor to the President for International Climate Policy.
During the meeting, Shri Manohar Lal highlighted the enduring partnership between India and the United States, underscoring their shared commitment to a clean energy future that promotes economic growth and development. He reaffirmed the Ministry of Power’s dedication to strengthening this partnership.
The Union Minister emphasized the significance of the ‘Power & Energy Efficiency Pillar’ under the Strategic Clean Energy Partnership (SCEP), noting its role in achieving energy transition goals for both nations.
H.E. Mr. John Podesta acknowledged India as a valuable partner, expressing mutual support for building resilient supply chains and investment-led strategies. He highlighted potential collaborations in clean energy, energy storage systems, and energy efficiency, and suggested that the US could assist India in enhancing its manufacturing capabilities.
Key discussion areas included:
1. Grid and Transmission Modernization: Both parties explored technical exchanges for upgrading grid transmission to accommodate future load growth, including policy consultations and potential financial support for modernization efforts.
2. Enhancing Manufacturing Capacity: The talks focused on expanding India’s manufacturing capacity in critical areas such as large transformers, aiming to boost domestic production and reduce reliance on imports.
3. Energy Storage Systems:The discussions included exploring state-to-state partnerships for long-duration energy storage studies and collaboration on grid-scale battery storage solutions.
4. High-Efficiency Cooling Systems The importance of promoting manufacturing projects and policies to enhance India’s capability to build, deploy, and export high-efficiency air conditioning systems and fans was also addressed.
The meeting highlighted the importance of the India-US partnership in advancing the global clean energy transition, with both sides expressing their commitment to deepening cooperation in these essential areas.
