Gujarat CM approves SOP for implementing Mukhyamantri Green Ring Road Vikas Yojana

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has approved the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the implementation of the Mukhyamantri Green Ring Road Vikas Yojana, a scheme aimed at ensuring efficient urban transport and a well-connected road network across the state’s municipal corporations. The initiative is designed to foster climate-resilient and sustainable infrastructure.

The state government has allocated Rs 200 crore for the development of these green ring roads by urban local bodies in various urban areas.

The primary goal of the scheme is to build ring roads that bypass city centers, providing connectivity between different parts of the city while diverting traffic away from congested central areas. Additionally, the initiative will address urban traffic congestion through the use of advanced and smart technologies for diversion, control, and management.

Under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s leadership, an advisory committee of experts in the field has been formed to help prepare the SOP for the Green Ring Road Vikas Yojana. The committee, chaired by the Principal Secretary, has recommended the adoption of cutting-edge green construction technologies and materials for the development of these roads.

The SOP also emphasizes the creation of durable, low-maintenance infrastructure that not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of cities but also promotes eco-friendly practices. Sustainable integration of green ring roads will include the development of carriageways, medians, shoulders, drainage systems, rainwater management, road utilities, tree plantation, traffic management, and safety measures.

In cities where green ring roads are being developed, the SOP mandates the use of at least 25% recycled materials in road construction to minimize reliance on new resources and encourage a circular economy. Municipal corporations have also been urged to plan for the maximum use of renewable energy in the energy consumption of these road projects.

Given the complexity and scale of the Green Ring Road Vikas Yojana, its execution will follow government guidelines and the prescribed SOP, with technical and environmental reviews of the detailed project reports (DPRs) also being conducted.

With the Urban Development Year 2025 in mind, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel envisions the creation of smart, sustainable cities. The Mukhyamantri Green Ring Road Vikas Yojana is a key step in turning this vision into reality, contributing to the development of climate-resilient road infrastructure.
