Greater Noida to get its first biogas plant at Jalpura cow shelter

Noida: The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) has begun work on its first compressed biogas plant at the government-run cow shelter in Jalpura village. The new facility will process 50 tonnes of cow dung every day to produce compressed natural gas (CNG), which can be used as fuel for vehicles and kitchens, reports The Times of India.

Using a method called anaerobic digestion, the plant will turn cow dung into clean fuel. Officials said this not only provides a green energy solution but also generates income to help maintain the shelter and manage waste more effectively.

The foundation stone for the project was laid on Monday in the presence of Dadri MLA Tejpal Nagar and GNIDA Additional CEO Shrilakshmi VS.

The plant is being built at an estimated cost of ₹20 crore and is entirely funded by a private agency appointed by GNIDA. It is expected to be completed within a year.

“This project supports both cow welfare and economic independence,” said MLA Tejpal Nagar. “The shelter is already well maintained, and now, with this plant, we can turn waste into something useful and profitable.”

The cow shelter in Jalpura, located about 12 km from Pari Chowk, covers 16 acres and is currently home to around 1,500 cows. The new plant is expected to meet a long-standing need in the area.

Cattle owners from nearby areas will also benefit from the project, as they can sell cow dung to the facility. This will create a new source of income while improving rural cleanliness and hygiene, officials said.

Additional CEO Shrilakshmi VS highlighted that the initiative is in line with the “Green India, Clean India” campaign. She urged cattle rearers to avoid dumping dung in drains, which often leads to blockages.

The project is seen as a key step in combining sustainability with rural development, creating environmental benefits alongside economic ones for the local community.
