“Gradually bringing bus system back on track”: Delhi CM Rekha inaugurates 100 electric buses at Narela bus depot

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday inaugurated the newly built Narela Bus Depot and flagged off 100 electric buses set to run on nine different routes across the national capital.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister reaffirmed her government’s commitment to upgrading the city’s public transport system, with a focus on modernization and sustainable mobility. “We’ve launched 100 ‘Devi’ electric buses today, which are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and will operate on nine routes. This depot was completed in just three months. Our vision is to shift Delhi’s transport system toward electric mobility, enhance services, and minimize public inconvenience,” she told reporters.

The inauguration ceremony was also attended by Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh and BJP MP Yogendra Chandolia.

Highlighting the government’s focus on rural areas, Chandolia said the initiative reflects both environmental responsibility and inclusive planning. “The Delhi government under CM Rekha Gupta has taken care to include rural areas in its development agenda. A DTC depot has been set up here, from where 105 mini electric buses will be operated. This initiative contributes significantly to improving Delhi’s environment. Women will be able to travel free on these buses, and they’ll also help ease traffic congestion,” he said.

Chandolia also emphasized the government’s long-term goal of transitioning the entire public bus fleet to electric and criticized the previous administration. “In the future, all buses in Delhi will be electric. Unlike the Aam Aadmi Party, which made tall claims but failed to deliver, our government is focused on real work,” he added.

Earlier this month, on the occasion of World Environment Day (June 5), CM Gupta had announced plans to introduce 280 additional electric buses by 2027 as part of a broader electric vehicle (EV) strategy. Speaking to ANI at the time, she said, “By 2027, the entire fleet operated by the Delhi government will consist of electric buses. We are also rolling out a new EV policy.”

CM Gupta described the newly launched electric buses as a valuable addition to Delhi’s transport infrastructure, noting their enhanced comfort and safety features.
