Gotlandsbolaget invests in biogas production

Gotlandsbolaget plans to invest in biogas production to provide climate-neutral ferry services between Gotland and the mainland by 2045.

The company has issued a press release stating that it is partnering with Andion CH4 Renewables and Equitix New Generation Fund to establish a state-of-the-art plant for the production of high-quality liquid biogas (LBG). The facility will be located outside Eskilstuna and is expected to begin production by the end of 2026.

As part of the agreement, Gotlandsbolaget’s ferry operator, Destination Gotland, will purchase the majority of the biogas produced at the plant under a 10-year supply contract. The biogas will be used as a clean energy source for the company’s ferries, reducing the environmental impact of maritime transport.

“This agreement increases the production of high-quality biogas. In addition, through this agreement, we guarantee up to 10% demand for Gotland traffic,” said Håkan Johansson, CEO of Gotlandsbolaget.

It can also be seen as the first crucial move by which Gotlandsbolaget wants to achieve lesser carbon emissions for ferry service and eventually comply with Sweden’s broader climate goals. Gotlandsbolaget now aims for a more environmentally friendly connection between Gotland and the mainland through commitment toward using mainly biogas energy.
