Panaji: The Goa government has approved plans to establish a plant at Headland Sada in Mormugao to produce compressed biogas (CBG) from municipal solid waste. The proposed facility will process 25 tonnes of waste per day and is estimated to cost Rs 12 crore, The Times of India reported.
The Goa Waste Management Corporation said the project aims to promote renewable energy and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. By treating segregated wet waste daily, the plant is expected to lower landfill dependence and make use of by-products such as compost. Officials said the initiative will demonstrate that waste management can be carried out in a sustainable way while generating useful products.
The plant will be set up at the Headland Sada waste site under the Mormugao Municipal Council and will be developed under a public-private partnership model. A senior official said this approach will allow the project to be implemented without any financial cost to the state government. If successful, similar projects may be introduced in other parts of Goa.
Currently, Goa has two waste treatment plants at Saligao and Cacora, both of which generate electricity. The proposed Headland Sada facility, however, will produce compressed biogas.
In a separate development, six companies have submitted bids to establish a 100-tonne-per-day solid waste management plant at Bainguinim, despite earlier concerns about the project. The companies are Hyderabad Integrated MSW Ltd, Hindustan Waste Treatment Pvt Ltd, 3R Management Ltd, Srinivas Waste Management Services Pvt Ltd, Organic Recycling Systems Pvt Ltd and HNB Engineers Pvt Ltd.
Officials said the documents submitted by the bidders are currently being examined, and eligible firms will be invited to move to the next stage of the selection process.
