The Egyptian International Gas Technology Company (GASTEC) has signed a landmark agreement with Novartis Egypt to supply biogas to the pharmaceutical company’s factory in Cairo. The agreement aligns with Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources’ strategy to diversify energy sources, enhance environmental sustainability, and reduce emissions, reports Egypt Oil&Gas Group.
Under the deal, biogas will be delivered using GASTEC’s advanced truck-based compressed natural gas transport system. The agreement was signed by GASTEC Chairman and Managing Director Abdelfattah Farahat and Islam Anwar, Head of Technical Operations at Novartis Egypt.
Farahat said the agreement reflects GASTEC’s commitment to expanding natural gas use in ways that support sustainable development, improve environmental outcomes, and maximise the value of Egypt’s natural resources. He highlighted that the collaboration fits within Egypt’s Vision 2030 and supports global Sustainable Development Goals.
He described the partnership with Novartis Egypt—a global leader in pharmaceuticals—as a model for balancing operational needs with environmental responsibility. Farahat also expressed optimism about future projects that would further benefit the national economy and environmental goals.
Anwar welcomed the collaboration and said the project is a major step forward for sustainability in Egypt’s pharmaceutical sector. He noted that the Novartis factory will now rely entirely on clean energy for its operations, which he called a significant milestone.
The project is the first in Egypt to produce, purify, and process biogas into biomethane for industrial use, marking a breakthrough in the country’s shift toward cleaner energy solutions.
