According to Statistics Finland, biogas production totaled 3,310 terajoules (TJ) last year. Of this total, 2,940 TJ was consumed, while the remaining 370 TJ (11%) was flared, as reported by Daily Finland.
As per media report, the amount of biogas delivered from production plants to consumers fell by 1% compared to 2022. Biogas production at landfill collection sites decreased by 10%, and production at wastewater treatment facilities dropped by 6%. In contrast, biogas generation from on-farm agricultural waste facilities rose by 31%.
Co-processing plants produced the majority of biogas (56%), maintaining the same level as in 2022. These plants flared 15% less surplus biogas compared to the previous year. Overall, flaring of biogas decreased by 7%, with the most significant reduction occurring in biogas plants linked to wastewater treatment facilities. However, flaring of biogas from landfill sites increased by 17%.
On-farm agricultural waste facilities contributed 5% to the total biogas production. In 2023, 11% of all biogas produced was flared, a slight improvement from the 12% flaring rate in 2022.
