The European Commission has approved an additional €7.9 billion for Germany’s aid program that supports electricity production from biomass and biogas, reports Bioenergy Insight.
The scheme was first approved in December 2022 to promote renewable energy and make Germany’s power market more flexible. With the new changes, the government will increase the tender size, set aside a quota for biomass plants already linked to district heating systems, and raise payments for plants that can produce electricity more flexibly. At the same time, biogas plants will face limits on the hours they can receive support, and older plants will have a shorter time to switch to the new scheme.
EU officials said the changes are needed and balanced, as they will help boost renewable power while keeping competition fair.
The Commission said a detailed version of its decision will be published under case number SA.118542 once confidentiality issues are settled.
