Energy sector strengthened and expanded with retail outlets doubling to over 1 lakh by 2025: Hardeep Singh Puri

The number of petrol pumps and gas stations in India has nearly doubled, rising from 51,870 retail outlets in 2014 to over 1 lakh by 2025, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said. The Minister shared these developments on X during a meeting of the Consultative Committee of MPs of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, focusing on Diversification and Energy Transition.

Over the past decade, India’s energy sector has undergone significant transformation, including improved infrastructure, diversification of energy sources, and a shift toward cleaner energy. According to Puri, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the sector has strengthened considerably.

He highlighted that the number of households using LPG has risen by 127 percent, and today, piped gas connections span the entire mainland of India.

“India today stands proud as the world’s 4th largest refiner, with natural gas pipeline length expanding to 25,429 km and LNG capacity more than doubling to 52.7 MMTPA,” Puri said on X. He added that these initiatives ensure energy security for the nation.

India has also diversified its energy sources by sourcing crude oil from 40 countries and signing long-term gas agreements with 15 nations. In exploration, the government has opened over 1 million square kilometers for oil and gas development.

“The Committee appreciated the progress in our energy transition strategy, including achieving 19.24 percent ethanol blending, commissioning 170 Compressed Biogas Plants, establishing Green Hydrogen projects by PSUs, and India’s first ISCC CORSIA-certified Sustainable Aviation Fuel production by IOCL,” Puri said. He emphasized that these initiatives demonstrate India’s commitment to a self-reliant and affordable energy sector.
