EDL Energy acquires GWE biogas and East Yorkshire’s Sandhill biogas plant

EDL Energy has announced the acquisition of GWE Biogas and its Sandhill Biogas Plant in East Yorkshire, one of the United Kingdom’s most advanced anaerobic digestion (AD) facilities, reports Bioenergy Insight.

Located near Driffield, the Sandhill Biogas Plant has been operational since 2011, serving both local and national customers. The facility produces up to 750 cubic metres of biomethane per hour, which is injected into pipelines operated by Northern Gas Networks, a sister company of EDL Energy.

The site also features a 4.5MW combined heat and power (CHP) plant that generates electricity and heat onsite, supporting local industries, with surplus energy exported to the national grid. In addition, it captures around 5,000 tonnes of high-purity biogenic CO₂ annually using advanced technology.

By processing food waste, kerbside waste, and agricultural feedstocks, the Sandhill Biogas Plant plays a crucial role in the UK’s transition to a circular, low-carbon economy. The process offers a sustainable alternative to landfill, recycles waste in accordance with the UK’s waste hierarchy, and highlights the importance of anaerobic digestion in the country’s renewable energy mix.

EDL Energy Chief Executive Officer James Harman described the acquisition as a major milestone for the company’s expanding global portfolio. “Anaerobic digestion complements EDL Energy’s landfill gas and renewable capabilities, aligning closely with our existing operations,” he said. “We are delighted to welcome the GWE Biogas team to our global family.”

GWE Biogas co-founders Mathew Girking and Tom Megginson expressed optimism about the transition. “We’re proud of what we’ve achieved at Sandhill and the employment opportunities created over the past 17 years. Joining EDL Energy opens new doors for innovation, collaboration, and growth, benefiting our people, customers, and communities,” they said.

Each year, the Sandhill Biogas Plant generates enough renewable electricity to power around 8,000 homes and enough biomethane to supply another 6,000. The facility also produces a nutrient-rich biofertiliser (digestate), offering farmers a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilisers while improving soil health and crop yields.

EDL Energy, which has operated in the UK since 1991, said the acquisition strengthens its renewable energy footprint. With this addition, the company’s UK operational sites increase to ten, raising total electrical generation capacity from 49MW to 53MW and introducing its first renewable biomethane injection plant in the country.

GWE Biogas will continue operating under its existing name as part of the EDL Energy Group, retaining its skilled workforce to ensure seamless continuity for customers, partners, and the local community.
