Delhi landfills to be flattened in 2026; take more green steps, says Chief Minister Rekha Gupta

New Delhhi: Delhi’s landfills will be flattened in 2026, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Wednesday in her New Year message, stressing that the coming year would focus on delivering on commitments already made, reports The Times of India.

Gupta said 2025 had been a year of groundwork, while 2026 would be about taking government initiatives to completion. She highlighted several steps taken in 2025, including the introduction of an education law to curb arbitrary school fee hikes, the rollout of free medical treatment of up to Rs 10 lakh under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, and the launch of Atal Canteens providing meals at Rs 5.

Referring indirectly to the opposition Aam Aadmi Party, Gupta said attempts were made to divert attention through issues such as air quality and other controversies, but her government focused on work that Delhi had been waiting for for years.

She said that in 2025, the government took on new responsibilities, faced fresh challenges and used opportunities to push development. Several schemes were approved to speed up infrastructure projects, and important steps were taken to improve the ease of doing business in the capital.

From an environmental point of view, Gupta said one of the most visible changes this year was the start of end-to-end carpeting of roads. She added that new machines were introduced to improve cleanliness, while bonfires and open burning were stopped. She described these efforts as only the beginning, noting that much more work remains.

Outlining plans for 2026, the chief minister said long-pending issues would be addressed and Delhi’s landfill sites would be flattened. She said the city continues to face many problems and legacy challenges that must be resolved in the coming year.

Gupta pointed out that Delhi’s first biogas plant was inaugurated in 2025 and said more such plants would be set up. She added that the process has also begun to establish facilities for treating electronic waste. Emphasising the need to remove the city’s garbage dumps, she said work on this issue would be intensified.

She said those responsible for creating the garbage mountains should take note that they will be removed in 2026, adding that Delhi will be aligned with the goals of Vision 2047.

Gupta said the government would carry out all tasks that the people of Delhi expect and ensure solutions to the city’s problems. She ended her message by extending New Year wishes to citizens and expressing hope that 2026 would bring new beginnings and happiness.
