Compressed biogas plant to come up in Kozhikode; agreement to be signed soon

Kozhikode: An agreement to set up a compressed biogas plant at Njeliyanparamba in Kozhikode will be signed later this month, marking a major step in the city’s waste-to-energy initiatives, reported The Hindu.

The decision was taken at a special meeting of the Kozhikode Corporation Council held on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, and chaired by Mayor Beena Philip. The project is a joint effort of the State government, Kozhikode Corporation, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), which will be responsible for establishing the plant.

Corporation Secretary K.U. Bini said the construction work would begin shortly. BPCL will also oversee the safety measures of the facility. The Corporation will provide seven acres of land for the plant, which is designed to process 150 tonnes of biowaste daily. A fuel station will also be attached to the facility.

The plant is expected to be completed in two years at an estimated cost of ₹99 crore. Biowaste collected from various wards by the Haritha Karma Sena will be supplied to the plant. The project aims to produce around six tonnes of biogas per day, which will be sold to the Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL).

The initiative is seen as a key step towards sustainable waste management and clean energy production in the city.
