Chandigarh MC, IOCL sign MoU to set up CBG plant at Daddumajra

Chandigarh: The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up a modern Segregated Organic Municipal Solid Waste (SOMSW)-based Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at Daddumajra under the Design-Build-Finance-Operate (DBFO) model, reports The Indian Express.

The MoU, signed at the MC office, marks a major step toward scientific waste management, reducing the burden on landfills and promoting clean energy in the city. The agreement was signed by MCC Chief Engineer C.B. Ojha and IOCL’s Dr. Ajit Thakur.

As part of the collaboration, the MCC will supply 200 tonnes per day (TPD) of segregated organic waste and 30 TPD of cow dung to the project. IOCL will take up the responsibility of designing, constructing, financing and operating the CBG plant. The civic body will also provide 10 acres of land at the Daddumajra dumping site on a nominal lease.

The project includes 33 per cent green belt development around the plant, compliance with Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) guidelines and acceptance of up to 10 per cent mixed unsegregated waste.

Officials from both MCC and IOCL said the upcoming plant will boost Chandigarh’s environmental goals by increasing waste processing capacity, cutting methane emissions from landfills and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. They added that the initiative aligns with the city’s long-term sustainability vision and its push for cleaner urban infrastructure.
