The CBG policy In India aims to promote Compressed Biogas (CBG) production and utilization through several beneficiary schemes introduced by the Govt. of India, with some States having specific policies and incentives, while others being in development stage.
Despite this, the implementation of compressed biogas (CBG) projects in India has been dismal, falling well below the goal of 5,000 projects by 2030.
To identify / understand the barriers in implementing CBG projects and discuss on the measures to resolve them, Cogen India had organized the One Day Business Meet “CBG In Uttar Pradesh : A Game Changer for Energy & Agriculture” at Hotel Holiday Inn, Lucknow, U.P. on Friday, August 22, 2025.
The objective of organizing a CBG Business Meet for Sugar Mills in Uttar Pradesh is to create a platform for sugar industry stakeholders to explore and adopt Compressed Biogas (CBG) as a sustainable and profitable energy solution. The event aimed to highlight the potential of utilizing sugarcane residues, such as bagasse and molasses, to generate clean energy, reduce operational costs, and improve environmental performance. By bringing together sugar mill owners, industry experts, government officials, and technology providers, the meet will foster collaboration on best practices, share successful case studies, and discuss the financial incentives and policies available to support CBG production. Ultimately, the objective is to drive the transformation of sugar mills into energy producers, promoting energy self-sufficiency, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and contributing to the green energy transition in Uttar Pradesh, while enhancing the economic viability and sustainability of the sugar industry.
With the growing emphasis on sustainable energy solutions the platform served as a unique opportunity to exchange knowledge, explore collaborations and discuss advancements in the areas of production, technology, challenges & solutions.

Sh Narandra Mohan, Former Director, NSI & Managing Director, Greentech Consultants Chaired the Session on “Opportunities & Challenges in Scaling CBG Production & Distribution” during this meet.
The discussions highlighted that while the technology for producing Compressed Biogas (CBG) from Filter Cake is largely established and not a significant hurdle, the real bottlenecks lie in the “In & Out” – specifically: The year-round consistency and quality of Filter Cake feedstock, and the effective management of Liquid Fermented Organic Manure (LFOM), a major by-product.
In addition to these, several other operational, logistical, and economic factors also need to be addressed.
It was felt that transparent dialogue, collaborative efforts across stakeholders, and timely policy support/interventions are essential to truly unlock the potential of CBG in Uttar Pradesh – both as a sustainable energy alternative and a boon for agriculture.
