BPCL offers to produce biogas from waste at Vidyaranyapuram

Mysuru: The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) is taking a significant step towards sustainable urban development with its ambitious waste-to-energy project at the Vidyaranyapuram solid waste management plant. Once operational, the plant is expected to tackle the city’s growing waste management challenges while generating renewable energy, marking a major milestone in Mysuru’s journey toward becoming a zero-waste city, reports The Times of India.

MCC Commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif revealed that Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has proposed setting up a biogas generation facility at the plant. The proposal, which has been forwarded to the government for approval, involves BPCL establishing a Rs 60 crore facility to convert organic waste into biogas. This non-profit initiative will process approximately 200 tonnes of organic waste daily, utilizing the biogas for fuel while helping the corporation manage a portion of its daily waste collection.

Commissioner Asif confirmed that a location for the facility has already been identified. The project represents a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors, aiming to significantly reduce the burden on existing dumping yards and provide a sustainable solution for waste management.

The initiative aligns with MCC’s ongoing efforts to address waste accumulation. The corporation has already processed 40% of the 7 lakh tonnes of accumulated waste, making significant progress. The new biogas facility will complement these efforts by offering a sustainable method to manage daily waste, reduce greenhouse gas emissions from decomposing waste, and generate clean energy.

Residents near Vidyaranyapuram have welcomed the development, expressing optimism that it will address long-standing concerns about waste management in the area. MCC officials have assured that necessary infrastructure, including access roads, will be developed to ensure the smooth operation of the facility.

This project underscores how urban local bodies can innovatively tackle waste management challenges while promoting renewable energy generation. It highlights Mysuru’s commitment to sustainable development and sets an example for other cities aiming to balance urban growth with environmental responsibility.
