New Delhi: In a move to support India’s environmental goals, Boeing and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) announced a partnership on Friday to promote the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the country. The collaboration aims to increase SAF production in India, help certify locally made SAF, and push for policies that support the growth of the SAF industry, reports The Times of India.
The two companies will work together to ensure sustainability practices are followed throughout the SAF supply chain, create training programs, and share successful methods to encourage the use of SAF.
Salil Gupte, President of Boeing India and South Asia, highlighted the importance of the partnership, saying, “Boeing is focused on creating solutions that help our customers meet their sustainability targets. SAF is a key part of reducing emissions in aviation, and working with partners like HPCL is essential to growing SAF production in India. We are proud to join hands with HPCL to support green aviation efforts that benefit India.”
Amit Garg, Director of Marketing at HPCL, pointed out the global push for cleaner aviation, stating, “As the aviation industry works to lower greenhouse gas emissions, developing and using SAF is critical to achieving long-term sustainability goals.”
HPCL is actively working to make SAF commercially available in India, with a focus on its development and production. The company’s Green R&D Centre has created a patented technology called Trijet, which turns used cooking oil into SAF.
Boeing noted that SAF can cut carbon emissions by up to 84% over its lifecycle, depending on the materials used. It can be made from various sources, such as non-edible plants, agricultural and forestry waste, non-recyclable municipal waste, and industrial byproducts.
This partnership is a significant step in India’s efforts to build a greener aviation industry and reduce its environmental impact.
