Biogas initiative receives local backing at Australian brick plant

Austral Bricks is preparing to transition its long-standing Horsley Park site in Western Sydney from fossil fuels to renewable energy, following government approval for a new $81.4 million (€48.8 million) bioenergy facility.

Supported by the Minns Labour Government, the project marks a major step in the company’s move toward using biogas derived from organic waste. The switch is expected to significantly lower the site’s carbon emissions.

Operating in Horsley Park since the 1960s, Austral Bricks will soon be able to replace natural gas with renewable gas produced through anaerobic digestion. This green energy will supply both electricity and heat to the facility and fuel the brick manufacturing kilns.

The plant will divert up to 150,000 tonnes of organic waste from landfill each year, processing material from commercial, industrial, agricultural, and residential sources.

Once operational, the facility is expected to support the production of more environmentally sustainable bricks.

Construction of the bioenergy plant is projected to generate over 250 jobs, representing both an economic boost and a commitment to environmental responsibility in the local area.

Austral Bricks is partnering with Delorean Corporation, a renewable energy company, to deliver and operate the facility.

Paul Scully, Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, said the Minns Government is committed to supporting local businesses in their transition to low-emissions technologies. “Austral Bricks’ move into bioenergy is a clear example of how industry can help lead New South Wales’ decarbonisation efforts,” he said.

“Bioenergy offers a reliable, renewable alternative to fossil fuels, and plays a key role in the circular economy by turning waste into a valuable energy source,” Scully added.

The Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure carried out a detailed assessment of the proposal, addressing considerations such as traffic, noise, air quality, biodiversity, and site access.

Dr Hugh McDermott, Member for Prospect, welcomed the development. “Austral Bricks has a proud legacy in Horsley Park, and this investment secures its future as a leader in sustainable manufacturing. It’s a great example of industry taking the initiative to meet environmental challenges while supporting long-term local jobs,” he said.
