Biogas body urges Delhi to combine EVs, CNG and CBG for cleaner transport

The Indian Biogas Association has called for a broader clean mobility strategy in Delhi, urging policymakers to combine electric vehicles, CNG and compressed biogas to achieve larger emission reductions, Business Standard reported.

In its submission on the draft Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy to the state government, the association said that the current share of electric vehicles in the overall fleet remains limited. It noted that CNG continues to be a practical cleaner fuel option due to its low emissions compared to diesel.

The association highlighted that the existing CNG network, including pipelines, fuel stations and vehicles, can support the expansion of compressed biogas supply. It said CBG, which is produced from agricultural residue, cattle waste and food waste, can help reduce carbon emissions.

Gaurav Kedia, chairman of the association, said Delhi has the potential to build a low-emission urban transport system by combining electric vehicles with CNG and CBG.

He added that replacing 20% of imported CNG with locally produced CBG could save at least $63 million in foreign exchange on gas imports.

The association said CBG can also help address multiple challenges, including reducing emissions, managing crop residue, improving energy security and generating jobs.

According to its estimates, blending 20% CBG with CNG could bring transport emissions closer to carbon neutrality. It added that 1 MMSCMD of CBG can fuel around 3.5 lakh vehicles, and with nearly seven lakh vehicles added each year in Delhi, about 2 MMSCMD of CBG would be enough to meet the fuel demand of all new vehicles.
