Bhubaneswar’s CBG plant nears launch, aimed at reducing city waste load

Bhubaneswar: The Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plant being developed under the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation is expected to begin operations soon, as construction and installation work move ahead at a fast pace. The project is intended to reduce the growing waste burden in the state capital. Housing and Urban Development Department Principal Secretary Usha Padhee recently carried out an on-site inspection of the facility, reports Orissa Post.

During the visit, she reviewed different sections of the plant and assessed its design and planning features. BMC Additional Commissioner Kailash Chandra Das, senior officials from the Housing and Urban Development Department, representatives of Oil India, and officials from the construction agency were present at the site.

Padhee underlined the need to protect the environment and stressed the development of green buffer zones around the plant. She also examined arrangements for vehicle movement, unloading of wet waste, storage facilities, and waste processing systems. The Principal Secretary instructed Oil India officials to speed up the remaining work so that the project can be commissioned at the earliest.

Oil India officials explained the process through which biogas and high-quality organic manure will be produced using wet and biodegradable waste. An agreement for the project had earlier been signed between the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation and Oil India in the presence of Housing and Urban Development Minister Dr Krushna Chandra Mahapatra.

Under the agreement, Oil India will handle and process about 300 metric tonnes of wet waste every day to produce biogas along with premium-quality organic fertiliser.
