Aemetis Biogas completes initial construction of multi-dairy anaerobic digester

Aemetis, Inc., a company specializing in renewable natural gas and fuels with a focus on low and negative carbon intensity products, has announced that its subsidiary, Aemetis Biogas, has completed the initial construction of a multi-dairy anaerobic digester in Merced County, California. This facility will process waste from around 14,000 dairy cows.

Set to begin operations by the end of 2024, the multi-dairy digester is expected to produce over 200,000 MMBtu of renewable natural gas (RNG) annually.

The digester will collect waste from four nearby dairies, all located within half a mile of the facility. It is also linked to the Aemetis biogas pipeline, which spans 36 miles.

“Aemetis Biogas is on track to significantly boost production this quarter, including the multi-dairy digester alongside two other dairy digesters,” said Eric McAfee, chairman and CEO of Aemetis.

He added, “We are encouraged by the rapid growth in revenue from new digesters, which will generate credits under the Low Carbon Fuel Standard and Production Tax Credits from the Inflation Reduction Act starting in January 2025. This will support our construction of additional digesters for more dairies.”

Currently, Aemetis produces biogas from anaerobic digesters that process waste from ten dairies, generating about 300,000 MMBtu of RNG annually. Once the multi-dairy digester and the two additional digesters are completed, Aemetis expects to produce approximately 550,000 MMBtu of RNG per year from 16 dairies.

Aemetis Biogas has agreements in place with 48 dairies and plans to add 27 more to its portfolio. When fully operational, the dairies involved in the Aemetis Biogas Central Dairy Project are projected to generate over 1.6 million MMBtu of RNG annually, resulting in estimated revenues of $250 million.
