Adani Group announces $100 billion plan for renewable-powered AI data centres in India

Adani Group has unveiled plans to invest $100 billion by 2035 to set up renewable energy–powered artificial intelligence (AI) data centres across India, in what it described as one of the country’s largest private investments in digital infrastructure, Sahyadri startups reported.

The group said the initiative will focus on building AI data centres that run on clean energy, while also expanding India’s overall computing capacity. The investment is expected to attract another $150 billion into related areas such as servers, cloud platforms, electrical systems and supporting infrastructure, taking the total value of the emerging AI ecosystem to about $250 billion.

As part of the plan, the Adani Group will increase the national capacity of its data centre arm, AdaniConnex, from 2 gigawatts to 5 gigawatts through multiple campuses across the country. The centres are designed to bring together renewable power generation, stable electricity supply and large-scale computing facilities.

The group has partnered with Google to develop a large AI data centre campus in Visakhapatnam. Work is also underway on new campuses in Noida, part of the Delhi-National Capital Region.

In addition, the company is working with Microsoft on projects in Hyderabad and Pune. Talks are also in progress with other global technology firms to set up more AI data centre campuses in different parts of India.

Chairman Gautam Adani said countries that successfully link energy capacity with computing infrastructure would lead the next phase of technological development.

The renewable energy required for the data centres will be supported by Adani Green Energy’s large solar and wind project at Khavda in Gujarat, which has a planned capacity of 30 gigawatts. More than 10 gigawatts of this project is already operational. The group has also committed an additional $55 billion to expand its renewable energy portfolio, including battery storage systems to support round-the-clock operations.

According to the company, the data centres will be equipped with efficient cooling and power systems and will set aside capacity for Indian language models and national data programmes. A portion of computing resources will also be reserved for Indian start-ups, research institutions and technology innovators.

The group said the initiative is aimed at creating a strong domestic base for both clean energy and computing, supporting the long-term growth of India’s digital economy.
