Adani Green Energy wins 1,250 MW energy storage capacity from Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation

Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), India’s largest renewable energy company, announced on Tuesday that it has received the Letter of Award (LOA) from Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) for a 1,250 MW energy storage capacity from Pumped Hydro Storage Projects (PSP).

The Panaura PSP project, located in the Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh, will have a minimum commitment of 40 years and is expected to be completed within six years, according to Adani. This project aligns with India’s clean energy objectives, which emphasize the importance of large-scale storage projects to integrate renewable energy into the grid and ensure 24/7 clean power availability.

As part of its strategy to support India’s energy transition, Adani Green Energy has expanded its portfolio to include energy storage solutions in addition to its existing solar, wind, and hybrid projects. The company is also set to add over 5 GW of hydro PSP capacity by 2030.

Adani has already broken ground on several hydro pumped storage projects, including a 500 MW project at the Chitravathi River in Andhra Pradesh, a 1,500 MW project at Tarali in Maharashtra, and an 1,800 MW project at Gandikota in Andhra Pradesh.

Hydro pumped storage (PSP) is a cost-effective, scalable, and reliable technology, capable of harnessing solar energy during the day to pump water, which can then be used to generate power during peak hours at night. This method ensures the integration of renewable sources into the grid while offering grid stability, peak shaving, and flexibility in energy management. Additionally, hydro PSPs provide frequency regulation and reserve generation, which are essential for a resilient and sustainable energy infrastructure.

As one of the cleanest and safest energy storage technologies available, hydro PSP plays a vital role in meeting India’s growing energy demand and decarbonization goals.
