Thiruvananthapuram: City corporation to sign agreement with BPCL to etablish centralized CBG plant

Thiruvananthapuram: The city corporation is ready to sign an agreement with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) to set up a centralized compressed biogas (CBG) plant in the capital. Four locations have been shortlisted, with the final selection expected soon. The plant, modeled after a successful facility in Indore, will be built on 10 acres and is expected to be operational by April. A feasibility study for the project has already been completed, reported The Times of India.

Corporation Secretary S. Jahangir confirmed that the final location is being decided, and the land will soon be handed over to BPCL for construction. The agreement will involve the city corporation, BPCL, and the landowner, with the plant being developed under a public-private partnership. It will process biodegradable waste, contributing to the city’s goal of achieving zero waste for organic matter. The facility’s capacity will be either 100 or 200 tonnes, depending on land availability.

In a broader effort to enhance waste treatment infrastructure, the state government has decided to set up five additional CBG plants across the state, based on the model implemented at Brahmapuram in Kochi, which is set to be commissioned soon.
